The modern Oceania Rennes Hotel is situated just 500 meters from the terminal buildings at Nantes Atlantique airport, five kilometers from downtown Nantes. Rennes, a city full of history and of arts, capital of Brittany, is often given the first prize for its quality of life. The hotel recently renovated, will confirm this statement Calmness, comfort and conviviality are present in the hotel, a few yards away from the town center.
The hotel restaurant, which has long windows affording plenty of natural light, serves a menu of French cuisine at lunch and dinner. Drinks and cocktails are on offer in the bar and guests will find complimentary newspapers in the lobby lounge. In summer, guests can take advantage of the hotel's outdoor swimming pool for a refreshing dip, and soak up the sun on the surrounding terraces.
Guests can stroll in the city's the botanical gardens or take a sightseeing cruise on the Erdre river. The hotel is approximately 30 kilometers from the beaches of the Brittany coast. A free shuttle service runs between the hotel and the airport terminals between 5.40 AM and 11 PM. There are hourly buses from the airport to downtown Nantes.
LAGE
Oceania Rennes Hotel, with business-like exterior and attractive gardens, is a 15 minute drive from Rennes' historic center. For a city that has been the capital and power centre of Brittany since the 1532 union with France, Rennes is – outwardly at least – uncharacteristic of the province, with its Neoclassical layout and pompous major buildings.
What potential it had to be a picturesque tourist spot was destroyed in 1720, when a drunken carpenter managed to set light to virtually the whole city. Only the area known as Les Lices, at the junction of the canalized Ille and the River Vilaine, was undamaged. The remodelling of the rest of the city was handed over to Parisian architects, not in deference to the capital but in an attempt to rival it.
The result, on the north side of the river at any rate, is something of a patchwork quilt, consisting of grand eighteenth-century public squares interspersed with intimate little alleys of half-timbered houses. It's quite a pleasant city to stroll around for half a day, but it lacks a cohesive personality.
