LAGE
Castello Hotel is situated beside the Old Venetian walls surrounding Heraklion and only 15 minutes walk from the very heart of the city centre and the Archaeological museum.
Heraklio is the largest city of Crete and the Capital of the Island Iraklion, formerly Candia, city, southern Greece, capital and largest city of the island of Crete (Kriti). Located on the northern shore of the island, Iraklion is encircled by fortifications constructed by the Venetians in the Middle Ages.
Although its harbor is shallow, Iraklion is an important center of coastal trade, principally in oil and soap. Soap is manufactured in the city, and wine and leather are produced nearby.
The city, an archiepiscopal see of the Greek Orthodox church, contains among its many places of worship a modern cathedral,Greek and Armenian churches, and mosques. A museum containing relics of antiquity is among the public buildings.
Iraklion was founded in the 9th century by the Saracens on what some historians think is the site of ancient Herakleion, the seaport of ancient Knossos (Knosos).
In the 12th century, Iraklion was a possession of the Genoese, who fortified the town; from the 13th to the 15th century, it was held by the Venetians, who extended the fortifications.
The Ottoman Empire captured Iraklion in 1669 after a long siege. The town became a Greek possession when the Ottomans ceded Crete to Greece in 1913. In World War II, Iraklion suffered heavy damage during the German airborne invasion of Crete in 1941. In 1971 the island's capital was moved from Khania to Iraklion. Population (1991)
